SERMON NOTES

Strangers & Exiles #4 – Submitting to Human Authority

Main Text: 1 Peter 2:11-25

Sermon Outline:

A Christian View of Human Authority

1- 2- Our ultimate authority is God Himself.

Human authority is derivative authority.

Ultimate Authority: King Jesus

Realms of Human Authority:

1- Governing Authority

2- Economic Authority

3- Spiritual Authority

4- Family Authority

Key Truths:

Every human being both exercises authority and lives under authority.

There is a distinctly Christian way to use authority (Matt 20:24-28).

There is a distinctly Christian way to submit to authority.

How Christians Practice Submission

Scripture commands us to submit to human authority unless that authority tells us to break God’s commands.

Define Christian Submission

1- Respectful attitude.

2- Deference in decision-making.

3- Obedience to direction.

4- Honor with words.

5- Doing good.

Two areas of submission in today’s passage:

First, all Christians are commanded to submit to governing authorities, from the emperor down to the local

governor. We can apply this command today by obeying the law and honoring those in office.

Second, household servants are commanded to submit to their household masters. We can apply this

command today by obeying our boss and respecting our employer.

When submission is difficult and costly for you, look to…The Example of Jesus

1- 3- 4- 5- Jesus suffered under unjust authority.

2- Jesus responded without sinning.

Jesus entrusted Himself to the Father.

Jesus suffered not only as our example, but our Savior.

Jesus is the Shepherd and Overseer of your soul.

When submitting to authority is hard, remember that Jesus went first and He is with you.
