SERMON NOTES
This We Believe #1 – I Believe
Jude 1-4
1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James:
To those who are the called, loved by God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ.
2 May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
3 Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.
4 For some people, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord.
Setting the Foundation: Why the Faith Must Be Guarded
Jude 1-2
Who is writing? Jude, the half-brother of Jesus.
Who is he writing to? Believers called and loved by God.
Jude 3-4
Why is Jude writing?
- The faith must be contended for.
- The faith has been delivered, not discovered.
- Some people seek to distort the true gospel.
How the Church Guards the Faith: Introduce the Apostles’ Creed
“Creed” comes from the Latin “credo” = “I Believe”
The Apostles’ Creed is one of the church’s earliest and most faithful responses to Jude’s call to “contend for the faith.”

The Invitation of the Apostles’ Creed: Personal belief, not private belief.
The Apostles Creed (c. 400AD)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to the dead.
The third day, He rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.”
From there, He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
