Growth Group Study Guide

Study the Word:

(1) Read John 19:38-42, Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:42-47, and Luke 23:50-56. From combining these descriptions, write out a portrait of Joseph of Arimathea. Why do you think he is mentioned by name in all four gospels? Why is the burial of Jesus important to the gospel narrative?

(2) Read 1 Corinthians 15:50-58. How should a believer in Jesus think about his/her own death? How does the death and resurrection of Jesus give us victory over death forever? According to verse 58, how does Jesus’ victory over death change our view of everyday life?

Personal Application:

(1) John mentions that Joseph of Arimathea was a disciple secretly because of his fears of the Jews. In what ways are you a secret disciple? Which moments in your life are you afraid to tell others that you are a follower of Jesus? How can you grow in courage and boldness?

(2) Facing death without Jesus can be a terrifying experience. Who in your life needs to hear the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection? Take a few minutes to pray over them by name today and then pray for courage to speak to them about their relationship with the Lord.
