Growth Group Study Guide

Study the Word:

(1) Read John 19:17-30. The death of Jesus on the cross is the most shocking part of the Christian faith – God dies for His people. According to these verses, what does the cross of Jesus teach us about God?

(2) Read Psalm 22:1-31. This Psalm is quoted in John 19 as one that is fulfilled in the death of Jesus. What other prophecies from this Psalm are fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Jesus?
Personal Application:

(1) The Old Testament prepares the way for Jesus’ life and ministry, giving context and meaning to His death on the cross. What is your favorite story from the Old Testament? How does that story point us to Jesus and His finished work on the cross?

(2) Jesus fully accomplished our salvation on the cross, and yet we so often feel like we need to add to the cross to be right with God. Why do you think we struggle to believe that the cross is enough? How can we live each day with the joy and freedom that comes from trusting in Jesus’ finished work?
