Set Apart

In the Ferguson home, we have a “celebrate” plate in our kitchen cabinets that we pull out only for special occasions. It’s not an everyday eating plate. We use it on birthdays or on special occasions. You might say that it is set apart for a special purpose. It looks like all the others plates, but it stands out as unique and different, because it was designed for something different. The Bible says that Christians are to be set apart. We used to participate in all the pleasures of this life without any regard for God, but now we have been transformed. We have a new identity and we have been called to a new way of life. By His mercy and love, God has called us to a special purpose in the world – to be filled with hope, passionate for holiness, and full of love for others. Through the book of 1 Peter, we learn what it means to be set apart by God. We can’t remove ourselves from the world around us, or completely free ourselves from temptation and sin, yet we can’t live like we used to live. We must come to terms with our new identity as temporary residents in this place. We are strangers in a foreign land.
